Featured Designer: Yevgeniya Kaganovich until June 30 April 05 2013
This Spring we are pleased to have artist Yevgeniya Kaganovich as Metana Jewelry’s Featured Designer. Her one-of-kind pieces of jewelry explore the cultural and social functions of adornment and how jewelry functions to signal identity, power, fraternity and status as well as its ability to communicate ideas about the wearer, project a desired image, attract, and seduce.
In The Pearl Necklace Series, Kaganovich examines the cultural value of pearls by juxtaposing these precious and highly desired objects with unexpected materials like silicone rubber. Pearls are embedded inside translucent lentil-shaped rubber discs as if to appear like one pearl is floating inside another. This protective membrane signals clear ideas about beauty, prestige, and purity while simultaneously addressing ideas about imperfection and corruption.
Yevgeniya Kaganovich received her Masters of Fine Arts form the State University of New York at New Paltz and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Metal/Jewelry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Kaganovich has worked as a Designer/Goldsmith at Peggie Robinson Designs, Studio of Handcrafted Jewelry in Evanston, Illinois and has taught Metalsmithing at Chicago State University, Chicago, Illinois, and Lill Street Studios, Chicago Illinois. Currently Kaganovich is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee heading a thriving Jewelry and Metalsmithing Area.
